John Paul Hammond at The Grey Eagle Asheville, NC Sunday October 5, 2008 This show was a huge treat. It has made this date among the top 100 days of my life...as I have since begun to recount the experiences of my time in this world. John Paul Hammond had become one of my lifelong favorites, after becoming aware of his music through the Duane Allman Anthology albums released. I had attended The Allman Brothers Band show in Knoxville, TN on 1-20-1973 just as much to see him as the Brothers. This was also the first time, in over 30 years, that I had used black and white film at a concert. It was a small venue with fixed seating. I was able sit the entire performance, one camera around my neck loaded with B&W film, and have a tripod mounted second camera in front of me for color. I had never shot with two cameras and four lens before. This was sweet! The great music, and the feeling that my timing and exposures were on, enhanced the evening's experience. His show was an enjoyable mix of music and stories of his experiences coming up in a time when many older bluesmen and women were being 're-discovered'...powerful music. After the show, we had a chance to meet with him and his wife...to talk and buy music or videos. They were extremely nice. I showed him some of the photos from the 1973 show, and also the book "Stevie Ray Vaughan: Day by Day, Night after Night", by Craig Hopkins. He autographed a photo (within the book) that he was in, from Double Trouble's trip to the Montreux Jazz Festival.
